If you wanted to buy a 2020 BMW Z4, here’s a warning: Don’t expect it to be cheap.

Of course, we never expected the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i to be cheap. Nevertheless, I felt a bit of a sad moment come on when this SupraMkV forum post came up in my web browser this morning. According to a recent photo leak on SupraMkV forums, the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i will cost an eye-watering $64,695. After tacking on the $995 destination charge, the starting price will be $65,690. If that leak turns out to be true, there’s just one word: Ouch.

Mind you, that price slots right in between the Porsche 718 Boxster and the Boxster S. The base 718 Boxster starts off at $60,050 (including $1,050 desination). The S, on the other hand, costs $72,450. For your money, the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i manages 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque – 32 horsepower more than the Boxster S. The 2020 BMW Z4 M40i also comes standard with M Sport brakes and differential, adaptive suspension, a step up from the standard sDrive30i model.

Rumor: 2019 Toyota Supra Could have 390 lb-ft of torque, weigh 3,300 pounds

Now that we may have some idea what the forthcoming Z4 M40i will cost, there’s one other important question. What will this high starting price look like for the impending Toyota Supra? We’re getting ready to see Toyota’s version of this co-developed sports car return at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. If this costs in the mid-$60,000 range, will the Supra also be heartbreakingly expensive?

Ultimately, we expect the Supra to use the same powertrains as the BMW Z4. That means either a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four making 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque or that 3.0-liter straight-six engine in the Z4 M40i. Both engines will come mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Earlier rumors suggested prices somewhere in the $63,500 range. However, it seems that’s closer to the BMW price, so we do expect the Supra to come in cheaper than that. Something in the mid-$40,000 area may be nearer the target.

Neither BMW nor Toyota have announced official pricing yet. So, we’ll have to wait and see what it takes to get your hands on either car. The new BMW Z4 M40i will go on sale in May 2019, while we may also see the Supra later next year. Stay tuned to TFLcar.com for more updates!
