Meet Aston Martin’s most powerful convertible yet.
Whenever Aston Martin releases a new car, you can rest assured that it’s going to be a looker. This DBS Superleggera Volante — the even more stylish version of the DBS Superleggera Coupe — is no exception. Now, after months of waiting, the brand’s flagship roadster is here in full glory. But it’s not just the looks that impress: The numbers are equally remarkable.
Like the hardtop DBS Superleggera revealed last june, this Volante model packs a twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V12 engine. And yes, you still get a whopping 715 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. That engine comes mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. It is the fastest convertible Aston Martin yet, with a claimed 211 mph top speed.
According to the company’s release, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds — just 0.2 seconds behind the coupe. 100 mph comes up in 6.7 seconds. At top speed, the Volante produces 390 pounds of downforce, which is nearly as much as the coupe. However, unlike the coupe, you’ll be able to hear that V12 engine a hell of a lot more clearly. It won’t take long to expose yourself to the elements, either. Aston Martin says the roof comes down in 14 seconds, and goes up in 16 seconds.
It won’t come cheap
Naturally, you would expect a 715 horsepower convertible Aston Martin to come cheap. You’d be right, particularly thanks to the Gas Guzzler Tax. If the EPA numbers are close to the coupe, that should translate to 17 mpg combined here, meaning $2,600 on top of the asking price.
Mind you, not that you’ll particularly care about $2,600 if you can afford the car in the first place. The total asking price (gas guzzler tax included): $329,100. The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante will go on sale in the third quarter of 2019.
