2020 BMW X4 M First Look: This Is The Most Usable M Car You Can Buy

Full driving impressions are coming soon

The engine is familiar…except where it isn’t.

When Andre reviewed the second-generation BMW X4 last year, it came in just available in two different models. One has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while the other has a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six. But this is the 2020 BMW X4 M, which you would expect to have a fire-breathing V8 under the hood…right? Actually, this car also has a 3.0-liter straight-six engine, but not as you’d normally know it.

The full-on 2020 BMW X4 M Competition packs 503 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged straight-six engine.

This 2020 BMW X4 M sports a mostly-new, high performance version of BMW’s B58 straight-six engine, in production since 2015. This new engine is the “S58”, and comes as a replacement to the S55 engine found in the BMW M3 and M4, among others. The standard X4 M puts out 473 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. In Competition form, however, BMW adds some sporty, athletic bits to the equation, and ups the power. Not just a little bit, either
— putting out a whopping 503 horsepower to all four wheels. Regardless of which version you get, the engine mates up to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

We are restricted on sharing our driving impressions of the new X4 M until next week, but you can check out how it sounds in the video above.

Spring for a $73,400 X4 M or the $80,400 X4 M Competition, and you’ll be greeted by a wide range of M-themed pieces throughout the interior. From the badging to the red starter button and those two individual “M” buttons on the steering wheel, this is another example of BMW’s full-blooded performance experience. Inside, you still get a wide range of technology and comfort features, from wireless charging to Apple CarPlay support through a 10.25-inch infotainment screen.
